A: My English writing always feels wordy. How can I make it more concise?

B: Try using non-finite verbs. Instead of saying "I want that I improve my speaking", say "I want to improve my speaking." And instead of "Because I was tired, I went to bed early", you can write "Being tired, I went to bed early."
试试用非谓语动词。别说“I want that I improve...”，要说“I want to improve...”。还有，“Because I was tired...”可以写成“Being tired, I went to bed early.”

A: So infinitives and participles can make sentences shorter. What about gerunds?
所以不定式和分词可以让句子更短。那动名词呢？
B: Gerunds are useful too. For example, "Swimming is good exercise" is smoother than "To swim is good exercise." But after verbs like enjoy, avoid, and consider, we usually use gerunds: "I enjoy reading", "I avoid making the same mistake."
动名词也很有用。比如，“Swimming is good exercise”比“To swim is good exercise”更自然。但在 enjoy、avoid、consider 等动词后，我们通常用动名词：“I enjoy reading”，“I avoid making the same mistake.”

A: I always get confused about whether to use "to do" or "doing".

B: That's normal. Some verbs can take both, but the meaning changes. "I stopped smoking" means I quit the habit. "I stopped to smoke" means I paused in order to smoke. Making a list of these verbs really helps.
这很正常。有些动词两个都可以接，但意思不同。“I stopped smoking”表示我戒烟了；“I stopped to smoke”表示我停下来去抽烟。列个表很有帮助。

【语法50】非谓语动词综合
非谓语动词包括不定式（to do）、动名词（doing）和分词（doing/done）。它们在句中不能单独作谓语，但可担任其他成分。
