对话

A: I'm a bit confused about subject-verb agreement in our essay. Could you help me check a few sentences?
  我对作文里的主谓一致有点困惑。你能帮我检查几个句子吗?
confused→adj.困惑的 | essay→n.作文 | subject-verb agreement→主谓一致

B: Sure. What's the first one?
  当然可以。第一句是什么?

A: "The number of students who are late seem to be increasing." Is that right?
  “迟到学生的数量似乎在增加。”这样对吗?
seem→v.似乎 | increase→v.增加

B: Almost, but remember: "the number of" means a single quantity, so the verb should be singular. It should be "seems".
  差一点,但记住:“the number of”表示一个数量,所以谓语用单数。应该是“seems”。
quantity→n.数量 | singular→adj.单数的

A: Oh, I see. What about "A number of people was absent yesterday"?
  我明白了。那“昨天许多人缺席”呢?
absent→adj.缺席的

B: "A number of" means "many", so it takes a plural verb. You need "were absent". Also, "the majority of the audience were moved by the speech" is correct because the audience here are thought of as individuals.
  “a number of”意思是“许多”,所以用复数谓语。你要用“were absent”。另外,“大多数听众被演讲打动”也是对的,因为这里的 audience 被视为个体。
majority→n.大多数 | audience→n.听众 | moved→adj.感动的

A: Got it. And what if the subject is "each of the students"?
  懂了。如果主语是“每个学生”呢?

B: "Each of the students" takes a singular verb. For example, "Each of the students has his or her own idea." Neither of them agrees with the other either.
  “每个学生”接单数谓语。例如,“每个学生都有自己的想法”。Neither of them 也接单数谓语。
each→pron.每个 | neither→pron.两者都不

A: What about "the committee"? Is it singular or plural?
  那"委员会"呢?是单数还是复数?
committee→n.委员会

B: It can be either. Also, "data" is often treated as plural in formal writing, and "phenomena" is the plural form of "phenomenon", so it takes a plural verb. None of these rules are difficult once you practice.
  都可以。另外,"data"在正式写作中常视为复数,"phenomena"是"phenomenon"的复数形式,所以接复数谓语。练习后这些规则没有一条难的。
data→n.数据 | phenomena→n.现象(复数) | none→pron.没有一个
